Tying up some loose ends from the opening week of the Spring signing period:
FOREST PARK BASKETBALL
A cool story is in the works regarding one girls basketball signee at Forest Park, Christal Williams.
Williams, a fluid, high scoring guard, averaged 17 points per game, while occasionally exploding for 30-plus this past season, before a midseason ACL tear sidelined her for the rest of the season.
Coach Steven Cole’s squad still managed to make the Class AAAAA Final Four for a fifth time in his first six seasons, and was an overtime loss to eventual state champ Redan from making a second trip to the title game. One would have to think that the Lady Panthers would’ve been a shoo-in to make that championship game and, perhaps even win it all, if not for Williams’ injury. As it is, Williams and Stephenson transfer Kerry Watson will both sign with National Junior College Athletic Association school Palm Beach State in Lake Worth, Fla. Wednesday.
Post players Breasia McElrath and Kanisha Tharpe have inked with Texas Southern University and Central Arkansas respectively.
Check back with thecrescentbuzz.com later this week for more on Williams’ journey.
LOCUST GROVE FIRSTS
The Lady Wildcats volleyball team broke new ground while watching two of its standouts finalize their college choices last Wednesday. Taniya Juarez autographed a letter of intent to play for Brewton Parker, while one of Region 4-AAAA’s best players, Devon Dickey, is on her way to West Georgia.
Dickey and Juarez became the first two players in school history to sign scholarship offers for volleyball. Dickey paced the Wildcats offensively with a team-leading 137 kills and .693 hitting percentage. She was third on the team with blocks with 12.
