Nobody in Jonesboro, Clayton County or any place in South Metro Atlanta for that matter will have to be convinced of Cam Sutton’s elite talent. But now the whole college football world is starting to take notice.

Sutton’s name is popping up on more than just one preseason list tasked with chronicling the nation’s best college football players. Earlier this week, the Tennessee corner was placed on the preseason watch list for the Bednarik Award which is doled out each year to college football’s defensive player of the year.

Sutton, a rising junior, has proven himself an effective shut down corner for the Vols as they try to climb back to its former prominence under coach Butch Davis.

And Thursday, popular sports blog The Big Lead listed Sutton as No. 30 on its list of the nation’s top 50 players.

“Cameron Sutton has been slightly under the popular radar at Tennessee. Should break out as a junior,” wrote Ty Duffy, the blog’s main college football writer.

Sutton tallied 37 total tackles, including 31 stops and three interceptions during his 2014 campaign. Added to those numbers is 13 pass breakups, a forced fumble and a punt return for a touchdown as Tennessee posted a 7-6 record, ending the 2014 season with a 45-28 win over Iowa in the 2015 TaxSlayer Bowl.

Sutton is ahead of such names as Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott and Florida State running back Dalvin Cook on The Big Lead’s list.

Sutton and the Vols will open up the 2015 season on Sept. 5 with a 4 p.m., EDT kickoff against Bowling Green in a game that will be televised on the SEC Network.

Here is The Big Lead’s top 50 list in its entirety.
