RIVERDALE, Ga. — With almost exactly two months before National Signing Day, Southern Crescent athletes are already making headlines in college football recruiting.

Riverdale senior defensive end Chidi Okonya took to Twitter Sunday night to announce he was de-committing from Tennessee — a place where he verbally pledged back in May after the Raiders’ spring football game.

Okonya, a consensus 4-star recruit who verbally committed to Tennessee after Riverdale’s spring football game back in May, chose the Vols at the time over more than two dozen schools that offered scholarships, including current No. 1 ranked Clemson, Georgia, Florida and LSU.

The 6-foot-5, 230 pounder elevated to being one of Georgia’s top high school prospects at D-End during the summer between his junior and senior seasons.

Okonya helped the Raiders to a 5-5 2015 campaign where it came just short of making a playoff bid after losing to Griffin in a Region 4-AAAA play-in game. The Vols finished second in the SEC East Division with an 8-4 mark, and will face No. 12 Northwestern in the January 1 Outback Bowl in Tampa, Fla.

Neither Okonya or Riverdale coach Terry Herrod immediately returned text messages for comment as of Sunday night.
