Surprise, surprise. Locust Grove baseball racked up major honors as the All-Region 4-AAAA teams were released Wednesday.

The Wildcats became the first team from the four-county Southern Crescent area to win a state baseball championship since Jason Hayward-Led Henry County Warhawks did it in 2006 after defeating a Lee County squad that featured now-San Fransisco Giants catcher Buster Posey.

But Locust Grove’s 2-1 series win over defending champion Buford only confirmed what many believed all season — that the Wildcats were the state’s best team with one of Georgia’s best pitching staffs, regardless of classification.

No shock then that a pair of Wildcat pitchers in Christian Young and Ethan Lindow took shared Pitcher of the Year honors, while coach Stephen Phillips and Eastside coach Bruce Evans were both pegged as Coach of the Year.

Region Player of the Year Terry Fuller of Griffin made the all-region superlatives a Southern Crescent sweep.

In addition to Young and Lindow, Locust Grove placed five other players on the First Team roster, including freshman hurler and Mississippi State commit Nolan Crisp. The Class AAAA champs added two more to the second team along with four honorable mention selections.

Eastside followed closely behind with four other First Team choices and three second teamers.

Aside from Fuller, Griffin placed four players on the Second Team and had two honorable mentions.

Jonesboro’s Jordan Holt was the lone Clayton County product to make the All-Region squad. Holt was a First Team selection.
